3 New Galleries

Posted by jlopatin on 1st July 2010

A few weeks ago, we visited Brookfield Zoo. It rained, so I didn’t shoot as many pictures as usual. We did get to see the dolphin show, which was fun.

The next gallery is full of shots I took while walking around Chicago on my lunch hour. Jim Vendiola joined me for some of these walks. Don’t forget about his upcoming film, DRIFT.

The final gallery was also taken during my lunch hour. Mr. Blotto played across the street from my building. They sounded really great!

Pig Roast (featuring The Thin Man)

Posted by jlopatin on 29th June 2008

Yesterday, I went to a pig roast, where my friend Mike’s band played. I took pictures. Taking shots of people is a far step from my usual subject matter. It was an interesting experience, and I learned quite a bit. I thought the lighting was a bit challenging.

Studio buildout day 2…

Posted by jlopatin on 11th November 2007

we finished!!!

right panel

Here is the right panel frame.

both panels

Both panels… all we have left to do is place the acoustic material, and wrap…

finished with trim

All done! We finished with some walnut trim.

looking good

I couldn’t wait to get things set up. I connected just enough stuff to do some listening tests, and it sounds GREAT! It is way better than I had hoped. The sound is even and well balanced. There are no bassy sounding spots in the room (even against the back wall), and the stereo spread is phenomenal.

We got it finished just in time, too! Next weekend, I’m going to be recording with my friend Joel’s jazz band.

Studio buildout day 1…

Posted by jlopatin on 4th November 2007

We started construction of my new recording studio control room this morning. Amelia’s cousin Dave is helping with the project. I am really happy with how it’s turning out!

insulation

I put the new insulation up by myself! It is mold and mildew resistant.

wall frame

We are building the new wall in three pieces. Dave built the center section at home and brought it over. The fit is perfect!

mounting points

We bent some conduit to move an outlet, and attached crossbeams to mount the new wall on.
finished!

Here is the finished center section! It looks great, and the room is already sounding better.

fabric

Here is a close up of the fabric we are using to wrap the walls.

We’ll be finishing up next Sunday, so look for more pictures then!

More music news

Posted by jlopatin on 21st July 2006

Joel and I got together in the studio again last night.

We worked on some tunes for Joel’s upcoming solo record. I felt like we are really on the same page as far as the direction of his tunes. I was pretty happy with some of the ideas we tried last night. We also jammed for a bit, and it was fun. Hopefully, we will work on things again very soon, and I can post a clip for your listening pleasure.

Music notes

Posted by jlopatin on 12th July 2006

Last night went pretty well. Joel had a new song idea, and we started a simple groove to work on. I had to reinstall Reason, which took way too long, and we had to break for dinner, so we didn’t get much done. It was fun, though, and there were many good ideas floating around. We plan on continuing next week. The new studio space was very comfortable, and easy to work in. I am excited to see what I can do to improve it even more.

It feels good to be involved in music again.
