I started by airbrushing a grey primer. Then I created a gradient using a Minitaire Ghost Tint (oil discharge). After that dried, I sprayed the color base coat. I tried to model them after real world crates I saw on the way to work. I had a difficult time finding stencils that were sized appropriately. The ones I did find were very difficult to use. The lettering is not perfect, but I was satisfied with the learning experience. I used blue painters tape to mask off the areas. The tape is a little too tacky for this application, and you can see that it caused some issues. You can also see that I had some overspray issues on the red crate. These were all cleaned up before I moved on the the next step.

Weathering! For this step, I took a small piece of foam and dipped it into black paint. I dabbed most of the paint off onto a paper towel, and then used it to poke the crates. I created an raw sienna oil paint wash, and liberally coated the entire crate. Then, I used a Q-Tip dipped in mineral spirits to clean up the messy areas. This gave each crate a filthy look, and added some shading and highlighting. On one of the crates, I left the wash to pool on the top. I wanted it to appear as if there had been standing water at one time. Then, I mixed burnt sienna oil paint with a tiny bit of raw sienna to make a rust color. This was only thinned a tiny bit with mineral spirits. I painted streaks of this from the bare metal bits down the sides. The streaks were thicker at the top of the line, and tapered off further down. I used a dry Q-tip to smear these streaks and blend them into the background. The oil paint takes forever to dry, so you can take your time with this step. If you are not happy, you can wipe the paint off with a little mineral spirits and try it again! Once you have it the way you like, it is important to use your favorite matte varnish to set the oil paint. I used Testor’s Dullcoat in a spray can. 2 coats!

Here are the 3 finished crates.
